Lubbers Quarters

Our cottages are on the north end of a 2 mile long island called Lubbers Quarters, east of the much larger Abaco Island. Both cottages face the northeast and our house is on the northwest side of the island. There are about 20 homes spread out across the island, most belonging to Americans, but there are no cars or tourist shops to speak of, just lush vegetation and miles of beautiful turquoise ocean in all directions.

We have a restaurant right on Lubbers Quarters called 'Cracker P's'. We can vouch for it's quality since our 15 year old daughter works there every Sunday! It's a two minute ride by boat from the cottage, and in addition to it just being a fun place to go, its all-grilled menu of food is delicious, and includes conch burgers, cracked conch.

Nearby

Hope Town (you can see it in the upper part of this map of the Bahamas) is the closest town in the area, is hard to miss by boat since it's world-famous lighthouse, still operated with kerosene and prisms, is visible from miles around. The lighthouse itself and it's museum are open to visitors

The town itself is small but historical, and has often been compared in look and feel to a small New England town. It offers three boutiques, a telephone station, post office, clinic, small drug store, a liquor store, and bakery. If you need to stock up on some food or just want to eat in, there are two grocery stores as well, including Vernon's, which makes it's own breads and delicious pies (their Key Lime Pie is the best we've ever tasted).

Man-O-War is only a little further away than Hope Town, and will take you about 20 minutes to reach by boat. It offers two grocery stores, two snack bars, bakeries, boutiques and a sail shop that makes handbags!
